The Famous Grouse Smoky Black Blended Scotch Whisky
A Bolder Side of a Scottish Icon
Elevate your cabinet with The Famous Grouse Smoky Black. Formerly known as The Black Grouse, this expression takes the world-renowned smoothness of the original blend and infuses it with a distinct, peated character. It is a masterfully crafted scotch designed for those who crave a hint of campfire smoke balanced by rich, fruity sweetness.
The Art of the Blend
What sets Smoky Black apart is the inclusion of a rare version of Glenturret, Scotland’s oldest working distillery. This peated malt is expertly blended with exceptional grain whiskies and iconic single malts (including The Macallan and Highland Park) to create a profile that is:
- Intensely Smooth: Retains the signature easy-drinking nature of The Famous Grouse.
- Richly Peated: Delivers a subtle, sophisticated smokiness that lingers on the palate.
- Darker by Design: Matured in sherry-seasoned and bourbon casks for a deep, russet golden hue.
Tasting Notes: Smoke Meets Sweetness
- Nose: Initial notes of soft, muscovado sugar and dried fruits, quickly followed by a fragrant, earthy peat smoke.
- Palate: A full-bodied experience. Rich flavours of dark chocolate, spice, and dried fruit are enveloped in a smooth, smoky envelope.
- Finish: Long, smoky, and aromatic, with a final hint of oak and spice.
Why Choose Smoky Black?
It is the perfect "bridge" whisky. If you enjoy the classic Famous Grouse but want to explore the world of Islay-style smoke without the medicinal intensity, Smoky Black offers the perfect balance of heritage and heat.
Founded in 1896 by Matthew Gloag, The Famous Grouse story begins in a small shop in Perthshire, Scotland, where Matthew blended his first dram. Matthew Gloag wanted to create the best quality blended whisky to be shared and savoured all over the world. More than 125 years later, The Famous Grouse is sold in over 100 countries.
Initially called ‘The Grouse’, the whisky was named after an occasion, in tribute to Perthshire’s favourite bird and in honour of its idyllic home. In 1905 the whisky was renamed The Famous Grouse, a smooth and perfectly balanced blend which became Scotland’s No. 1 whisky in 1980.
