Laphroaig 33 Years Old Strong Characters Chapter 1 Donald Johnston

This 33 Year Old Single Malt is the first chapter in Laphroaig’s series of rare and collectable aged whiskies Strong Chapters, named ‘Donald Johnson’. The series Strong Characters celebrates the history of the Laphroaig distillery and the strong characters that have contributed to it. In this case, the distillery co-founder Donald Johnston.
The packaging includes an illustration by artist Bill Bragg. This release was aged for 33 years in a combination of American oak barrels and European oak sherry hogsheads, giving it a distinctive smoky character and robust flavour profile.

Nose:    Creamy fudge with honey and a touch of sea salt.

Taste:    Starting with stewed fruit and smooth vanilla créme brûlée.

Finish:    Laphroaig’s iconic smoky finish sets the scene for savoury aromas of cured meat.

Sometimes referred to as the most richly flavoured of all Scotch whiskies, Laphroaig is one of the most iconic island distilleries. With its smoky and iodine flavours, Laphroaig embodies the Islay identity.
Although the exact etymology isn’t known, Laphroaig is said to mean “broad hollow by the bay” in Gaelic. This references its location, a small basin on Islay’s southern coast. However, it officially operated under the business name of D. Johnston & Co throughout most of its history after Donald and Alexander Johnston, who in 1815 founded their distillery on the island’s south coast.
