Diplomatico Distillery Collection No. 2: The Elegance of the Barbet Column
Discover the refined side of Venezuelan rum with Diplomatico Distillery Collection No. 2, a dedicated release showcasing the legendary Barbet Column Still. While Batch Kettle No. 1 represents body and balance, the Barbet No. 2 celebrates the "light and fruity" profile that provides the sophisticated lift in Diplomatico’s world-class blends.
The Heritage of the Barbet Still
The Barbet Still was originally created in France in the late 19th century and brought to Diplomatico’s La Miel distillery in 1959. This continuous distillation system is crafted entirely from copper, a rarity for column stills, which helps to remove undesirable sulphur compounds and results in a spirit of exceptional purity. This specific method allows the Master Blender to create a Venezuelan Rum that is light in body but remarkably rich in aromatic fruitiness.
Sensory Profile
- Nose: Bright and highly aromatic. It opens with intense notes of tropical fruits and citrus peel, followed by delicate layers of white flowers, honey, and a soft toasted oak background.
- Palate: Crisp, elegant, and dry. The palate features a beautiful clarity of flavour, with ripe mango and passionfruit blending seamlessly with vanilla bean, biscuit, and a gentle wood spice.
- Finish: Clean, long, and refreshing. The fruit-forward character tapers off into a graceful, dry finish with lingering hints of fresh citrus and delicate oak tannins.
A DOC Venezuelan Masterpiece
As a proud carrier of the Rum of Venezuela DOC, Diplomatico ensures every bottle meets the highest standards of production. The Barbet No. 2 is produced from high-quality sugar cane molasses and aged in American white oak barrels that previously held bourbon and malt whisky.
The tropical climate of the Andes foothills facilitates a "dynamic aging" process, where the spirit interacts intensely with the copper-rectified wood. Bottled at 47% ABV, this expression is non-chill filtered to preserve the nuanced esters and silky mouthfeel produced by the historic Barbet column.
The Collector's Note For fans of Diplomatico Planas or those looking to understand the "architecture" of a blend, No. 2 is an essential study in style. It is an "aficionado’s rum" that shines when served neat, offering a level of elegance and floral complexity rarely found in traditional dark rums.
