There are plenty of American rye whiskies with interesting stories but Jaywalk Rye Whiskey has something genuinely different behind it: a forgotten New York rye grain, just 10 surviving seeds, more than a decade of patience, and an ambition to bring an important part of New York whiskey history back to life.
Created by New York Distilling Company in Brooklyn, Jaywalk is a range of premium American rye whiskies deeply connected to New York — from the grain grown in the state to the whiskey distilled and aged there.
And at the centre of the story is an extraordinary grain called Horton Rye.
The story of Jaywalk began long before the first bottle reached a shelf.
New York Distilling Company was founded in 2011 with a particular fascination for rye whiskey and its historic connection to New York and American cocktail culture.
That obsession eventually led the team to Horton Rye, a historic rye variety with roots reaching back to 17th-century New York.
The problem was that Horton Rye had effectively disappeared.
Working with agricultural specialists and a New York farmer, the team gained access to just 10 seeds of the historic variety.
Ten seeds aren't enough to make whiskey.
They're barely enough to begin growing rye.
What followed became a remarkable long-term agricultural experiment. Those original seeds had to be carefully propagated, tested and grown season after season until there was finally enough grain to begin distillation.
It reportedly took around five years simply to produce enough Horton Rye to start making whiskey.
More than 13 years after the project began, cultivation had expanded dramatically, with around 200 acres of Horton Rye being grown in New York's Finger Lakes region.
That makes Jaywalk more than simply another rye whiskey brand. It represents an attempt to bring a piece of New York's agricultural and distilling history back from near extinction.
Rye whiskey is commonly associated with pepper, spice and a dry, assertive character.
Jaywalk wanted to explore what rye could offer beyond that familiar profile.
Horton Rye became the answer.
The historic grain can contribute flavours extending beyond conventional rye spice into caramelised sugars, stone fruit and tropical fruit characteristics, including notes reminiscent of peach, mango and candied pineapple.
Rather than treating rye simply as an ingredient, Jaywalk places the grain itself at the centre of the whiskey.
The result is a distinctly New York interpretation of American rye whiskey: historic in origin but thoroughly contemporary in execution.
The Jaywalk collection explores that New York rye character through three different expressions.
Jaywalk Rye Small Batch is the ideal introduction to the range.
Made using New York rye and bottled at 46% ABV (92 Proof), it offers the richness and spice expected from rye while highlighting the fruitier characteristics that distinguish Jaywalk.
Expect an expressive combination of rye spice, darker sweetness and fruit-driven character.
It's also an extremely versatile style of whiskey. Enjoy it neat or over ice, or put its rye character to work in classic whiskey cocktails such as a Manhattan or Old Fashioned.
For drinkers looking for greater intensity, there's Jaywalk Bonded Rye.
Aged for seven years and bottled at exactly 50% ABV (100 Proof), it is produced according to the demanding standards associated with American Bottled-in-Bond whiskey.
The expression combines Horton Heirloom Rye and Field Race Rye, delivering greater weight and concentration while retaining Jaywalk's distinctive fruit and rye character.
The result is a rich, full-bodied rye where spice meets fruit, with the producer describing characteristics including pink peppercorn, peach and dried mango.
At 100 Proof, Jaywalk Bonded has enough structure to be a serious sipping whiskey while remaining an excellent choice for a powerful Old Fashioned or Manhattan.
Then there is the whiskey that takes the Horton Rye story to another level.
Jaywalk Heirloom Rye is a limited Single Barrel Cask Strength Rye Whiskey designed to showcase the historic Horton grain as directly as possible.
Its mash bill contains:
75% Horton Rye
13% New York Corn
12% Malted Barley
Individual barrels are hand selected and bottled at cask strength, meaning both flavour and ABV can vary from barrel to barrel.
Typical releases have been aged for around eight or nine years, making Heirloom an intriguing proposition for collectors as well as serious American whiskey enthusiasts.
Because this is a single-barrel whiskey, each barrel has its own individual personality. Once that particular barrel is gone, its exact combination of characteristics cannot simply be recreated.
For anyone interested in discovering what makes Horton Rye special, Jaywalk Heirloom is the ultimate expression of the project.
What makes the Jaywalk story particularly compelling is its connection to place.
This isn't simply whiskey carrying New York imagery on the label.
The grain is grown in New York. The whiskey is distilled in New York. And the brand's home is in Brooklyn, where New York Distilling Company has spent years pursuing its vision of modern New York rye.
Even the name Jaywalk feels unmistakably New York — unconventional, confident and slightly rebellious.
That personality carries through to the bottles themselves, with their industrial black-and-white New York imagery and bold flashes of colour.
American whiskey has experienced extraordinary growth, and consumers now have an enormous selection of bourbon and rye from which to choose.
That makes authenticity increasingly important.
Jaywalk isn't interesting simply because it is another premium American rye.
It's interesting because someone decided that 10 seeds of a virtually forgotten grain were worth more than a decade of work.
Those seeds became fields.
Those fields became whiskey.
And that whiskey became Jaywalk Rye.
For bourbon drinkers looking to explore rye, experienced rye enthusiasts searching for something different, or whiskey collectors interested in provenance and unusual grain varieties, Jaywalk deserves attention.
From the approachable Small Batch, through the powerful 100 Proof Bonded Rye, to the limited Single Barrel Cask Strength Heirloom, the range offers three different ways to experience the revival of New York rye.
Jaywalk Rye isn't simply inspired by New York. It's grown, distilled and aged there.
And behind every bottle is the remarkable story of a rye grain that almost disappeared — and the people determined to bring it back.
